Project Narrative

This contemporary house and ADU in Los Angeles explores curvature as a response to the site. The project is organized around a cluster of trees near the center of a long, narrow property. Rather than treating the trees as obstacles, the house bends around them, allowing the landscape to become the organizing element of the design.

An L-shaped structure forms the ground level of the house and establishes an outdoor space around the trees at the center of the site. The form is then duplicated to create the second story, but rotated to allow the upper volume to complete the spatial enclosure around the trees, transforming the space between the two volumes into a central courtyard that anchors the entire residence.

The curved walls grow out of this act of containing the courtyard. They are not applied gestures, but the result of shaping the building around the landscape and guiding movement through the plan. These curved edges soften transitions between spaces, frame views toward the garden, and draw daylight deep into the interior.

From the street entry to the interior void and the detached ADU at the rear of the property, the project maintains a consistent architectural language that connects buildings. The ADU’s facade is also carved to create a space for a courtyard of its own, reinforcing the project’s broader intention to preserve and build around the landscape.
